South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a more determined fight against corruption. This is a necessary condition for reducing poverty in the country, Ramaphosa said yesterday in the annual state of the nation address to both houses of parliament in Cape Town. South Africa was recently shaken by the discovery of major corruption scandals dating back to Ramaphosa’s predecessor Jacob Zuma.

His speech marked the beginning of a jubilee year for South Africa: 25 years ago, the apartheid regime of the white minority was replaced. „This year we will celebrate one of the greatest achievements of humanity: we will celebrate the triumph of freedom over submission, the triumph of democracy over racist tyranny, the triumph of hope over despair,“ said Ramaphosa.

His government will focus this year on ensuring „economic growth and job creation.“ For the President in office for a year, the speech was also the entry into the election campaign: observers expect the presidential election in a few months with his victory.
