Brazilian ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, arrested for corruption, has been sentenced to 12 years and 11 months in prison in another trial. A courthouse in southern southern Curitiba yesterday found him guilty of sponsoring a construction company to renovate a property in Atibaia, Sao Paulo State, on contracts with the state-controlled oil company Petrobras.

Lula had always asserted that he did not own the estate, but his close associate Fernando Bittar. But Judge Gabriela Hardt argued that for at least a while Lula and his family had used the farm as if it had been their own.

In 2017, Lula was convicted in another case of involvement in a large-scale corruption affair and money laundering. Since April 2018, he has been serving the sentence of nine years and six months for twelve years and one month in prison in the prison of Curitiba, the capital of the state of Parana. The now 73-year-old was also found guilty of having been favored by a involved in the Petrobras scandal construction company.
