In Belgium, the resignation of Flemish regional environment minister Joke Schauvliege is causing a stir. The politician had claimed that intelligence had informed her that there was a conspiracy behind the climate protests of Belgian students that had been going on for weeks.
„More than spontaneous solidarity“
Schauvliege had said on Saturday at an event: „I know who is behind this whole movement (…) – the intelligence has told me – so I can guarantee you that I see not only ghosts, but behind the protests is more than spontaneous solidarity for our climate. „The statement had caused considerable doubt and an outcry in the political competition.
Schauvliege admitted yesterday that he had misinterpreted the state security. She made a mistake under pressure. Because it should not turn to the climate debate to her person, she announces her resignation.
Young people in the street
In Belgium, several thousand students are currently taking to the streets each week in the Climate Protester. Last week, around 35,000 people participated in the Youth for Climate movement’s protest. The protest should continue at least until the EU election in late May.
