The use of smartphones is growing according to a survey in many countries, but there are still differences – both between and within individual nations. This was the result of a study by the US-based Pew Research Center, which polled more than 30,000 adults in 27 countries last summer.

At the top stands South Korea with a 100% utilization of mobile phones. In the Asian country, for example, 95 percent of respondents use a smartphone and five percent use a non-internet-enabled mobile phone. This is followed by Israel (88 percent smartphone, ten percent cell phone and two percent no mobile phone) and the Netherlands (87/11/2).

In Canada, 25 percent do not have a mobile phone

In Germany, which ended up in eighth place in the survey, more than three-quarters of respondents (78 percent) said they own a smartphone, 16 percent use a conventional cell phone and six percent do not use a mobile phone. Austria is not included in the investigation. Among industrialized nations, Canada falls out of line, where as many as 25 percent do not own a mobile phone.

Among the nine emerging and developing countries surveyed, South Africa (60/33/6) and Brazil are ahead (60/23/17). The bottom is India. Just under a quarter (24 percent) uses a smartphone, 40 percent a non-internet-enabled mobile phone and 35 percent have no mobile phone at all.
