At the collapse of a gold mine in Guinea, West Africa, according to consensus, at least 17 people were killed. A police officer said yesterday that the mine in the Siguiri area had collapsed last night. The number of deaths is only temporary, because in the village Norassoba in Siguiri many people were missing.

Local MP Alpha Kabinet Doumbouya said he had „seen at least 17 dead“. In the Siguiri area alone, there are more than 20,000 prospectors working in the mines without a license. They come from Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

Guinea is rich in natural resources and has a large agricultural potential. But the majority of the population lives in poverty.
