According to insiders, US President Donald Trump wants to appoint David Malpass as the new World Bank chief. With the high-ranking Treasury Secretary, a Trump supporter and skeptic of multilateral institutions would head the World Bank. According to a European diplomat, the US government has already informed several countries about the personnel decision.

„Politico“ had first reported on the nomination of Malpass. She should be announced tomorrow. The US Presidential Office did not comment on the information. In 2017, Malpass criticized the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other institutions of this nature for growing and getting involved.

Traditionally under US leadership

The replacement of the chief post at the World Bank had become necessary after the previous boss Jim Yong Kim had surprisingly announced his resignation on 1 February. Traditionally, the US is the head of the World Bank. One of the tasks of the institute is poverty reduction. By contrast, the sister organization IMF usually heads a European or a European, currently the Frenchwoman Christine Lagarde.
