The tax credit of 700 million that the government gave to buyers of electric cars in 2018 has ended up with wealthy car owners, de Volkskrant writes on the basis of answers to parliamentary questions from the CDA. Sales of Teslas increased by 260 percent.
Half of the electric cars sold were Teslas and Jaguars with a catalog value between 80,000 and 120,000 euros. The government assumed an average catalog value of 43,000 euros.
Due to these subsidies, according to the Volkskrant, there is a budget bounty of a few hundred million euros, although the House of Representatives still has to be informed about this.
It was the fear of CDA leader Sybrand Buma that especially „prosecco drinking Tesla riders“ benefit from subsidies for electric cars and that this would „be at the expense of the common man“.
According to de Volkskrant , the subsidies for electric cars are paid for by higher car taxes on petrol and diesel cars.
