For their breakfast coffee and the espresso in between the consumers in Germany take deep in the bag.
Between the beginning of December 2017 and the beginning of December 2018, the Germans spent nearly four billion euros on their favorite wax-maker alone in the food trade and in drugstores, ie almost 50 euros per capita. This is the result of a recent study by the market research company Nielsen.
The Germans bought a little less coffee than in the twelve months before. In terms of volume, sales fell by just under one percent to 382 million kilograms, even by 2.8 percent in terms of value. However, this does not necessarily mean a decline in coffee consumption, market researchers believe. „In our estimation, this may also be due to the fact that Germans increasingly drink coffee outside the home,“ said Nielsen beverage expert Christiane Stuck.
Consumers are most likely to grab ground coffee when shopping at the grocery store or discount store. The classic accounted for around half of the amount of coffee sold in the trade. Ranked second in the ranking ranked the whole bean, accounting for about a quarter of total sales. Soluble coffee and coffee pods followed in third and fourth place. Coffee capsules ranked last with just over five percent of the sales volume. Because of their comparatively high price, however, they represented around 14 percent of sales.
„We observe that especially the portioned coffee with the Germans is becoming increasingly popular,“ Stuck reported. This applies to coffee capsules, but also for whole-bean products for the fully automatic coffee machine.
