The US also wants to talk about agriculture in the forthcoming trade talks despite the contrary wishes of the European Commission. The aim of the negotiations is to reduce or completely abolish EU tariffs on agricultural exports from the United States, as the office of the US Trade Representative reported yesterday.
Other barriers, such as products developed with the help of biotechnology, will be dismantled. Europeans are ready, according to EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, to include all kinds of industrial goods, including cars, in a trade pact, but agricultural products should be excluded.
The EU and the US had decided this summer to explore the possibilities for a trade agreement. Higher US tariffs on imported cars from Europe are off the table so long. EU insiders expect US President Donald Trump to use them as leverage to open the European agricultural market to American farmers.
