The automaker Fiat Chrysler wants to settle the dispute with the US Department of Justice over excessive exhaust emissions with the payment of more than 700 million dollars (about 605 million euros), according to insiders. This should be officially announced today, said three persons familiar with the matter Reuters news agency. Fiat Chrysler declined to comment on it.
The US accuses the American-Italian auto company to have bypassed exhaust gas limits in more than 100,000 diesel vehicles with the help of a special software. In the past, the group has denied wrongdoing. Nevertheless, Fiat Chrysler had set aside precautionary money in order to be able to absorb any possible costs by punishments.
Fiat Chrysler has secured the sale of diesel vehicles in the US with a software update. Volkswagen had to pay more than 25 billion dollars (about 21 billion euros) in the US because of exhaust gas manipulation.
