The populist government of Italy has today backed the protest of the „yellow vests“ in France against head of state Emmanuel Macron. „Yellow vests – stay firm!“ Wrote Italian Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio in the blog of his five-star movement.
Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini of the right-wing populist Lega agreed with his cabinet colleague and said he supported „honorable citizens“ in a protest against a president who ruled „against his people“.
The „Yellow West“ movement has been on the Macron government since November. According to government figures, around 50,000 people took part in the rallies throughout France at the weekend. The resurgent protests led to clashes with security forces. Rioters were causing outrage in Paris, storming the Ministry building of government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux.
