US President Donald Trump has again threatened to close the border with Mexico in the budget dispute with the opposition Democrats.
If the Democrats did not give the money to complete a wall and change the „ridiculous“ immigration laws, then they would be forced to completely close the southern border of the US, Trump wrote on Twitter.
In several other tweets, Trump also complained about disadvantages for the US when trading with Mexico. The United States is losing so much money here. Even before that, the country must protect itself. „We build a wall or we close the border.“
Trump had threatened to close the border several times before – partly because of large groups of migrants from Central America who had made their way to the USA. With regard to trade with Mexico, the US government had already agreed a new agreement in early October – together with Canada. The US government wanted to reduce trade disadvantages compared to the other countries.
Because of Trump’s vehement demand for a border wall to Mexico, the dispute over a new budget for several federal ministries has escalated. The president refuses to sign a law if it does not provide $ 5 billion for the border wall. The Democrats reject that.
Then the government business partially came to a standstill. Because of the shutdown hundreds of thousands of government employees are condemned to forced leave or have to work for the time being without salary. The parties in the White House and the US Congress believe that the deadlock will drag into the new year.
