In his opinion, Cohen must serve a full sentence, tweeted the US president.
Cohen had surprisingly confessed last week that he had lied to the US Congress regarding the Russia affair – out of loyalty to Trump. Among other things, the affair involves the construction of a Trump Tower in Moscow. Cohen admitted he had made false statements at the time of the construction project negotiations, in order to appear in line with Trump’s political message. At the convention, the lawyer said that the Trump Tower project was completed in January 2016. However, according to his current presentation, it was continued until June 2016, when Trump was sure to secure the nomination for the Republican presidential candidate.
Trump described Cohen’s statements as fictitious. Before departing for the G20 summit to Argentina this weekend, the US president told reporters that Cohen was lying to get a milder sentence. Cohen cooperates with FBI Special Investigator Robert Mueller and other investigators. His lawyers argue that because of this collaboration he deserves not to go to jail.
Trump wrote in another tweet that Mueller was not about finding the truth – he was only interested in lies. The Special Investigator examines whether there were collusion between Trump’s campaign team and Russian officials in the alleged Russian interference in the US presidential election campaign. The US president has repeatedly called the investigation a witch hunt.
