Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva L.Purevsuren participated in the 7th UN Forum on Business and Human Rights held in Geneva on November 26-28.
On November 28, Ambassador L.Purevsuren delivered a speech at the ‘Leading by example? Using government trade promotion and development finance as levers for human right due diligence’ session, introducing the Alliance for Torture-Free Trade, an initiative of Mongolia, the European Union and Argentina.
Mr.L.Purevsuren emphasized that the number of countries eradicating the death penalty, torture and inhuman treatment significantly increased over the past 20 years. However, the production and trade of goods used for torture and punishment is still ongoing.
“In 2017, Mongolia initiated the Alliance for Torture-Free Trade jointly with the European Union and Argentina in order to end the trade of torture tools, provide the public with information, exchange experience, improve legal environment of member states and create a mutual database,” he said.
Ambassador also noted that over 60 countries joined the alliance over the past year, which is crucial to promotion of the initiative through joint efforts. He also announced that an international legal document to ban the trade of torture tools will be issued at the Ministerial meeting.
