He was 77 years old. Bertolucci became world famous in the early 1970s with „The Last Tango in Paris“. The film with Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider triggered a scandal because of obscene sex scenes. Other famous films by the director include „The Conformist“, „1900“, „Little Buddha“ and „The Dreamer“.
His film epic „The Last Emperor“ of 1987 received several Oscars. For his life’s work Bertolucci was awarded, among others, at the Venice Film Festival and in Cannes.
