The Spanish head of state threatens to reject the Brexit Treaty

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has reaffirmed his threat in the dispute over the British territory of Gibraltar with a veto to the Brexit agreement. After a conversation with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Sánchez wrote on Twitter that the positions of both sides were still far apart. „My government will always represent the interests of Spain, and if there are no changes, we will veto the Brexit.“

According to her office, May said she had just signed a Brexit agreement covering the entire UK, including Gibraltar. The peninsula in southern Spain has been part of Britain since 1713, but is regularly reclaimed by Spain.

Spain calls for the establishment of a veto right in all future decisions on the area. The government in Madrid has been threatening for days to refuse the Brexit Treaty otherwise. The EU and the UK want to conclude the treaty next Sunday at a special summit of EU heads of state and government.
