A soldier is patrolling the border between Mexico and the US: Donald Trump has sent close to 5800 troops to the border with Mexico in the face of the refugee marches from Central America to the United States.

Donald Trump has threatened the migrants on the US border with Mexico with the use of weapons. US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis now clarifies what rules apply to US soldiers operating at the border.

The US soldiers on the border with Mexico should be allowed to use bats only in incidents with migrants from Central America. US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Wednesday that Customs and Border Guard could request soldiers to reinforce if refugees are violently trying to cross the border. The soldiers are then not armed.

According to Mattis, exactly 5,764 US soldiers are currently deployed on the border with Mexico. The cost of the operation is currently estimated at $ 72 million. But the defense minister said the number is expected to increase.

On their way to the US, hundreds of other migrants have arrived in the Mexican border town of Tijuana, where discontent is spreading to newcomers. In the largest migrant hostel in the sports complex „Benito Juárez“ arrived in the course of Wednesday (local time) about 1300 people.

In total, about 4400 people were accommodated there, authorities said. The newly arrived migrants had left on Tuesday in the city of Mexicali, about 180 kilometers away, to Tijuana. They are part of the so-called migrant caravan that left Honduras more than a month ago.

Central American migrants caravans: According to the Mexican Ministry of the Interior, 8,000 people from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras currently cross Mexico in various refugee marches to reach the United States.

Central American migrants in Tijuana are waiting to apply for asylum in the US. Many more people are on their way to the north of Mexico. Authorities estimated that around 10,000 people will arrive in Tijuana. They flee from violence and poverty in their home countries. But not all Mexicans have an understanding for this: For in the north of the country many people are stuck in their search for asylum in the US – often for months, without a job, without their own accommodation, depending on the help of the state.
