Murder of a journalist identified

Maltese investigators have identified, according to a report, the possible backers of the assassination attempt on journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. It was a group of „more than two“ suspects of Maltese nationality, reported the Times of Malta, citing the investigators. The investigations are in a „very advanced stage“. The Ministry of the Interior was initially unable to obtain an opinion on request.

The journalist was killed by an explosives attack near her home in her car on October 16, 2017. So far, three men are accused of having placed and exploded the car bomb. They are in custody awaiting trial. The son of the journalist, who suspects influential people behind the murder, had criticized it as sending a „terrible“ signal if only those who had exploded the bomb were convicted.

So far it was unclear who wanted to silence the journalist. According to the Times of Malta report, the suspects now had different motives. It is unclear who the police are for the clients and whether they come from the criminal milieu, the economy or politics.

Caruana Galizia had reached a large readership with her reports of minor and major scandals in the Mediterranean state, but also made many enemies. Her research on corruption and money laundering, which also affected Maltese government officials, made her known beyond Malta’s borders.
