The human rights organization Amnesty International has deprived Myanmar’s de facto head of government, Aung San Suu Kyi, of the title of „ambassador of conscience“ because of the Rohingya crisis. In a letter to Suu Kyi, Amnesty General Secretary Kumi Naidoo was disappointed by the Nobel Peace Prize winner’s apparent „indifference“ to the military’s atrocities against the Muslim minority in her country.
„Today we are deeply disturbed that you are no longer a symbol of hope, courage and indefatigable defense of human rights,“ Naidoo wrote. „Amnesty International can not justify your continued status as an ambassador of conscience, and that is why, with great regret, we are taking this title away from you.“
Amnesty International awarded Suu Kyi the honorary title „Ambassador of Conscience“ in 2009, the highest honor of the human rights organization. At that time, the long-standing opposition leaders were still under house arrest.
