The US wants to significantly tighten the asylum law. In the future, people should be able to apply for asylum only, if they cross the border with the US at an official transition, said the Department of Homeland Security yesterday. US President Donald Trump will sign the new regulation shortly.
Trump had announced last week a presidential decree calling for a tightening of the asylum law. Before the congressional elections on Tuesday he had further aggravated his rhetoric against immigrants, he regularly warned against an alleged „invasion“ by illegal immigrants.
Reasons are thousands of people mainly from Honduras, who are currently on the way to the United States. At the same time, Trump asserted that he was not against immigration, but that she had to be controlled. Experts expect that the decree will be challenged in court.
