At the request of the Macedonian Special Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating the affairs of the former government under the leadership of the national conservative VMRO-DPMNE, a court in Skopje today frozen part of the party assets. Among other things, according to media reports are 69 real estate.
Affected by the court decision is also the party headquarters in Skopje, whose value is estimated at more than 15 million euros. The Special Prosecutor’s Office had called for action against the now-opposition party as part of its investigation into allegedly illegal party funding.
Former PM sentenced for abuse of office
VMRO-DPMNE was in power between 2006 and mid-2017. Her former party leader, ex-Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, was recently sentenced to two years in prison for abuse of office. There are also other proceedings against him.
VMRO-DPMNE has been linked to numerous scandals, including electoral manipulation through false electoral rolls, illegal mass interrogation of more than 20,000 people, media harassment and corruption.
