In Myanmar, thousands of people took to the streets against the military junta today. In the economic metropolis of Yangon, the predominantly young demonstrators called for a „spring revolution“, as reported by AFP reporters. Violent clashes broke out between security forces and demonstrators in Hsipaw in northern Shan State. According to local media reports, at least five demonstrators were killed, as the dpa reported.
Two people were reported to have died in Shan State in the east, one in Kachin State in the north and two in the neighboring Sagaing region. At least 20 people were injured, some seriously.
Hundreds of people took to the streets in the Mandalay area. Led by monks in saffron robes, they waved the flag of the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by the ousted de facto head of government Aung San Suu Kyi.
According to local media reports, security forces chased protesters through the streets in Yangon and arrested many of them. Several explosions could also be heard in the city in the morning. The authorities blame „rioters“ for the explosions that are being heard more and more frequently.
Violence against demonstrators
The military seized power in Myanmar on February 1, thus ending a ten-year phase of democratic change in the country for the time being. The junta has since faced massive protests. The army and police use brutal force against demonstrators.
According to activists, nearly 760 civilians have been killed since the coup. The junta put the number of demonstrators killed at 258. In addition, 17 police officers and seven soldiers were killed.
