The German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) has to answer questions from the members of the German Bundestag in the Wirecard investigation committee this morning. Wirecard filed for bankruptcy at the end of June 2020 and is said to have falsified the balance sheets for years.
The committee of inquiry is supposed to deal with the incidents around the Munich payment service provider and in particular to examine the actions of the federal government and the authorities subordinate to it.
In the case of Scholz, the role of the financial supervisory authority BaFin, which is subordinate to the finance department, has not followed up on fraud reports against Wirecard for a long time. Tomorrow the hearing of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) is on the agenda. Earlier this week, other members of the federal government had to testify.
