After a judge overturned the verdicts against the former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the plenary session of the Supreme Court in Brasilia will judge the individual decision. Nine out of eleven judges of the highest court voted in favor, two against, as the news agency Agencia Brasil reported yesterday (local time). The assessment itself should take place today.
With the overturning of the judgments, Lula had regained his political rights. With the confirmation, the 75-year-old would take an important step on the way to a possible presidential candidacy in 2022. The left-wing politician, who ruled from 2003 to 2011, recently announced a new candidacy.
Head of state Jair Bolsonaro, whom many blame for the coronavirus pandemic that is spiraling out of control in Brazil, should not remain president.
In 2018, Lula was sentenced to twelve years and one month imprisonment in the second instance for corruption and money laundering and, despite a lead in the polls, could not take part in the next presidential election, which Bolsonaro won. A judge in March concluded that the previous court in the city of Curitiba did not have jurisdiction and referred to the judiciary in Brasilia.
