A new variant of the coronavirus has been found in a woman in Brazil. The scientists at (Instituto) Butantan, who coordinate a network for the alarm for Covid-19 variants, have identified the new variant in the city of Sorocaba near the metropolis of Sao Paulo, wrote the research institute “Instituto Butantan” on Twitter. Accordingly, the new variant is similar to the South African one and will still be investigated.
The variant was discovered in a 34-year-old woman who showed mild symptoms, reported the news portal „G1“. Paulo Menezes, director of the Sao Paulo Coronavirus Emergency Center, said the patient had indicated that she had not recently traveled inside or outside Brazil.
At the same time, Brazil (211 million inhabitants) reported another record for the number of new deaths per day. The Ministry of Health announces 3,869 more deaths and 90,638 new infections.
