A passenger plane caught fire in an attack on an airport in southern Saudi Arabia. The fire is under control, the state television reported today, citing the military alliance that is fighting the Houthi rebels in Yemen. The insurgents attacked Abha Airport, which is near the town of Khamis Mushait.

„Threats to civilian travelers are a war crime,“ said the alliance on the news channel Al-Arabiya. There were initially no reports of possible victims.

The Shiite Houthi rebels, who are supported by Iran, repeatedly attack Saudi Arabia with drones and rockets. The Sunni kingdom is fighting the Houthis in neighboring Yemen and wants to reduce Iran’s influence in the region. The rebels had intensified their attacks in recent months.

The Houthis had already attacked Abha International Airport in June 2019, killing one person and injuring more than 20 others. Today, the military alliance claims to have intercepted two armed Houthis drones.
