Presidential candidate cannot vote in Ecuador

0

The main left candidate in the presidential election in Ecuador is banned from voting in his own country. The economist Andres Arauz will not be able to cast his vote in Ecuador tomorrow because his residence is registered in Mexico, the electoral authority of the South American country said yesterday. He is only allowed to vote in Mexico at the Ecuadorian consulate there.

Before making his candidacy public in August, Arauz, an ex-minister under former President Rafael Correa, lived in Mexico. Together with the right-wing former banker Guillermo Lasso and the left-wing representative of the indigenous population, Yaku Perez, Arauz leads the polls. In Ecuador, people elect the successor to President Lenin Moreno, who will not run for re-election and whose four-year term ends on May 24th.
