Guatemala brought thousands of people back to Honduras yesterday after the violent breakup of a refugee route. They were driven by buses and trucks to the El Florido border crossing, where they entered Guatemala on Friday. According to the authorities, 3,500 people have been sent back to Honduras, including several hundred children.

Police officers and soldiers dispersed around 4,000 people, the majority of whom came from Honduras, near the city of Vado Hondo in the south-east of the Central American country and wanted to reach the USA on foot. Mexico, which had sealed off the borders in view of the refugee route, also provided buses to bring the people back to Honduras.

According to their own statements, they are fleeing poverty and unemployment as well as the rampant gang violence in Honduras. Two devastating hurricanes have exacerbated the situation in the country.
