Former Connecticut teacher and current education officer, Miguel Cardona, is set to join President-elect Joe Biden’s administration as Secretary of Education.

Cardona will help ensure that every student „can receive high-quality education from pre-school to post-secondary vocational training, regardless of zip code, parents‘ income, race, sexual orientation and gender identity or disability,“ Biden’s transition team said yesterday. Cardona has yet to be confirmed as Minister of Education by the Senate.

With him, Biden keeps his election promise to nominate a teacher for the office. The 45-year-old would be another Latino in the future government. Interest groups had asked Biden to fill management positions with Americans of Hispanic descent.
Biden: The toughest CoV time is still ahead

However, in view of the persistently intense pandemic, Biden gives the Americans no hope of a quick improvement in the situation – on the contrary. „Here’s the simple truth: The darkest days in the fight against Covid are still ahead of us, not behind us,“ said the Democrat yesterday in Wilmington, Delaware, in a speech before the holidays.

“We need to prepare to strengthen our backbone. As frustrating as it is, it will take patience, perseverance and determination to beat the virus, ”said Biden. It is therefore important to continue to observe the known precautionary measures over the holidays and beyond in order to avoid further infections. This also includes not celebrating Christmas this year with many family members as usual, warned Biden.
