Some Covid 19 patients in Mexico City can now look their doctors in the face despite mouth and nose protection – to a certain extent. This is made possible by the “Faces behind the masks” campaign by the non-governmental organization Confianza e Impulso Ciudadano (for example: Citizens‘ Trust and Impulse). She has printed photos of the faces of hundreds of doctors and nurses in the Mexican capital on stickers that they can attach to their protective clothing.
According to the group, the aim is to provide emotional support to health workers in the pandemic and to show patients that there are people behind protective equipment. The model is a similar action in Israel. According to reports, the first experiences with the photos in Mexico City are good. Patients now have more confidence in the treating staff, and the mood is better, said nurses from the newspaper “Reforma”.
Mexico is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. The state with the 10th highest population in the world has so far recorded more than 97,000 deaths related to the Covid-19 disease – the fourth most worldwide. Because of the high excess mortality, the government assumes that in reality there are around 50,000 more deaths. Almost a million infections with the coronavirus have so far been confirmed in the North American country. The real number is likely to be much higher since there is very little testing in Mexico.
