In the fight against the spread of the corona virus, the Greek government has ordered a three-week lockdown for the entire country from Saturday. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis justified the tough step in a televised speech today that he could not allow the health system to be overloaded.

From Saturday morning, all shops except supermarkets, pharmacies and other vital shops must close. There is also a general curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Some schools are switching to distance learning

This does not apply to employed persons who have a corresponding confirmation from their employer. If you want to go shopping or go to the doctor during the day, you have to inform about it by SMS. The schools in the state – with the exception of kindergartens and elementary schools – will switch to online operation. Mask requirements apply everywhere.

Mitsotakis said the number of new admissions to hospitals is already high. „If things continue like this, the first hospitals will be at their limit in the next few days.“ The state wants to support a large part of those working people who do not earn any money because of the measures with 800 euros each for the month of November.

Compared to other countries, Greece has not been so badly affected by the crisis. However, the numbers have skyrocketed in the past few weeks, especially in the major cities of Athens and Thessaloniki.
