The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold an initial vote on Constitutional Justice-designate Amy Coney Barrett in a week’s time. Republican committee chairman Lindsey Graham set the date for the vote today for October 22nd. The conservative lawyer Barrett then has to be confirmed in office by the entire Senate. This should happen in the following week – and thus before the presidential election on November 3rd.
A confirmation of the 48-year-olds nominated by President Donald Trump for the Supreme Court is almost certain: Trump’s Republicans have a majority of 53 of the 100 seats in the Senate.
The opposition Democrats renewed their criticism that Trump and his party want to push through the personnel before the presidential election in less than three weeks. Senator Amy Klobuchar spoke of a „shame“. She recalled that before the 2016 election, Republicans had blocked a candidate judge nominated by then-President Barack Obama for months.
