The World Health Organization (WHO) expects an increase in daily coronavirus deaths in Europe in October and November. „It’s going to be tougher,“ WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge said today. The number of infections with the virus is currently increasing in Europe, but the number of daily deaths has remained relatively stable.
Kluge: Vaccine won’t end pandemic
The world does not want to hear such bad news at the moment, „and I understand that,“ said Kluge. But in October and November „we will see an increase in mortality“.
The Copenhagen-based WHO official warned against placing too high expectations on vaccines. „I keep hearing: ‚The vaccine will be the end of the pandemic.‘ Of course not!“ Said the Belgian.
So far it is unclear whether a vaccine could help all population groups. There is evidence that a vaccine can help some groups but not others. „If we then also have to order different vaccines, what a logistical nightmare,“ said Kluge.
High number of new infections
Most recently, 307,930 new infections were reported worldwide within 24 hours. That is around 1,000 cases more than the most recent high a week ago. Since the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen became known at the end of last year, more than 28.6 million infections have been reported worldwide.
However, according to experts, the number of unreported cases is considerable. The front runners in the new cases are India, the USA and Brazil in absolute terms. Spain ranks fourth with around 12,000 new infections within one day.
