After his execution, the Iranian wrestler Nawid Afkari was buried under strict security that night. The human rights activist Mehdi Mahmudian, who is also a friend of the Afkaris family, announced this on Twitter. According to Mahmudian, Afkari was buried in Sangar, a village in the southern Iranian province of Fars.
His family was not allowed to attend the funeral. The 27-year-old Afkari was executed on Saturday in Adel-Abad prison in Shiraz, southern Iran, despite international protests.
According to the Iranian judiciary, Afkari had killed a security officer during a demonstration in Shiraz in 2018. It was said that he had confessed. The athlete, his family and human rights organizations alleged that the confession was obtained through torture.
Even a wave of solidarity from home and abroad has not caused the government to rethink. The execution of Afkaris has sparked angry protests on social media in Iran.
