The Russian presidential office has denied responsibility for the poisoning of the opposition politician Andrei Navalny. Therefore, there is no basis for sanctions against Russia in this case, said the Kremlin in Moscow today. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned against jumping to conclusions.
According to the Berlin Charite, the Kremlin critic Navalny was poisoned with a chemical nerve agent from the Novitschok group. The German government therefore asked Russia to explain itself.
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke openly yesterday of an „attempted poisoning“ with which Navalny „should be silenced“. „Very serious questions“ would now arise, „which only the Russian government can and must answer“.
