India passed the 50,000 coronavirus death threshold today. According to the website of the Ministry of Health, 50,921 people have died as a result of coronavirus infection, and more than 2.6 million are infected. Authorities reported more than 900 new deaths within 24 hours. After the USA, Brazil and Mexico, the country has the most CoV deaths.

Many experts assume that the number of unreported cases is much higher, since little is tested in the second most populous country on earth. In addition, deaths are often not properly recorded. Despite the rising number of deaths, the Ministry of Health wrote on Twitter yesterday that the death rate from infections in India was „one of the lowest in the world“ at less than two percent.

The coronavirus is currently spreading rapidly in India, especially in rural areas, where the health systems are particularly poorly developed and protective measures such as wearing masks and distance rules are often ignored. Infected people are also often socially ostracized in these regions, which discourages people from getting tested.
