Since the start of the corona virus pandemic, more than 700,000 people worldwide have died from an infection with the virus, according to US scientists. That came from today’s data from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. There are now more than 18.5 million confirmed infections with the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen.
Only about two and a half weeks ago the threshold of 600,000 dead and 14 million confirmed infections had been exceeded. Since then, the pandemic has spread to the United States, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, India and South Africa, among others.
Over 157,000 killed in the U.S.
Worldwide, most infections and deaths occur in the United States, a country with around 330 million inhabitants. According to the university, there are around 4.8 million confirmed infections and around 157,000 deaths. Brazil ranks second with around 2.8 million known infections and around 96,000 deaths.
Relative to the number of inhabitants, however, the number of deaths is higher in some European countries. According to the university, 47.5 people per 100,000 inhabitants died in the USA, 45 in Brazil. In the UK, this figure is 70, 58 in Italy and 56 in Sweden – eleven in Germany and around eight in Austria.
The Johns Hopkins University website is updated regularly with incoming data and therefore shows a higher level than the official figures of the World Health Organization (WHO). In some cases, however, the numbers have recently been revised downwards. Experts assume that the number of unreported cases is higher.
