Australia has recorded the highest daily coronavirus death toll since the pandemic began. As the authorities in the state of Victoria announced today, another 15 coronavirus deaths were counted there within 24 hours. So far, such a high number of new fatalities has not been recorded on any day in all of Australia.
Melbourne, the capital of Victoria and the country’s second largest city, had become a focus of the pandemic in recent weeks. Hundreds of new cases of infection are recorded there every day. Compared to the previous day alone, there were 725 new cases.
The spread of the virus could not be slowed down by the strict exit restrictions that have been in place in Melbourne for almost a month. The virus has spread rapidly, especially in old people’s homes in the city.
In Melbourne there is also a mask requirement, many shops are not allowed to open. Just the day before, the Victoria authorities had drastically increased the fines after numerous violations of quarantine requirements for infected people. Infected people who violate the quarantine rules for the second time will face fines of 5,000 Australian dollars (around 3,050 euros) in the future, up to now it was 1,652 (around 1,000 euros) dollars.
