The number of new coronavirus infections is skyrocketing in the Czech Republic. 212 new cases were added yesterday, the Ministry of Health announced today. It was the highest number in almost a month. The number of actively infected rose above the 5,000 mark for the first time since the pandemic began and was 5,046. Almost 9,000 people were considered to have recovered. 360 deaths have been linked to the disease.
The agency estimates that local CoV hotspots are behind the recent increase. The mask requirement has therefore been reintroduced in the eastern administrative region of Moravian-Silesia. In the northern region around Liberec, mouthguards will become mandatory in health and social facilities as of Friday when visiting pharmacies.
Dozens of infected people after party in Prague night club
The authorities registered 65 cases in connection with a party in a Prague night club alone. Football players from several third division clubs were among the infected, said a spokeswoman for the health authority on Czech television CT.
In the meantime, a postponement of the regional and senate elections, which are due to take place on October 2nd and 3rd, is no longer entirely ruled out. The reason is that people in quarantine are not allowed to vote. Interior minister Jan Hamacek said he did not want to contest the right to vote, and announced the establishment of a working group on the problem.
