China has sharply rejected the G-7 group’s demands on its dealings with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. China is „resolutely opposing the G-7 foreign ministers‘ statement,“ said senior government official Yang Jiechi at a meeting with US chief diplomat Mike Pompeo today, according to the Beijing State Department. Yang and Pompeo had been conferencing at a meeting in Hawaii for almost nine hours.

The G-7 Foreign Ministers yesterday urged China to rethink its Hong Kong security law. This harbors the danger of „seriously undermining“ the principle „one country, two systems“ and the high degree of autonomy of the former British crown colony. Yang rejected the criticism when he met Pompeo. China is „firmly opposed to the G-7 ministers‘ request and is“ unbreakable „for the introduction of the law, Yang said, according to the Beijing Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to critics, the law put in place by the Chinese National People’s Congress constitutes an encroachment on the semi-autonomous status of the financial metropolis and endangers democratic civil rights. The group of the seven leading industrialized countries (G-7) includes the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Japan and Great Britain. The People’s Congress will be discussing the Hong Kong Security Act in the coming days.
