According to the US military, more Russian mercenaries are participating in the Libyan civil war than previously thought. It is assumed that there are 2,000 employees of the private Russian „Wagner Group“ in Libya, said Nicole Kirschmann, a spokeswoman for the US Africa Command, today of the dpa. They are entrusted with various tasks.

The use of the „Wagner Group“ in Libya is controversial. An internal UN report recently spoke of about 800 to 1,200 paramilitaries fighting on the side of the insurgent general Chalifa Haftar. The group is said to have relations with the Kremlin.

Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed that mercenaries from all possible states are deployed in Libya. Should Russians fight among them, they are not there on behalf of the state. Haftar receives help from Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, among others, in his fight against the internationally recognized government.
