For weeks, Sweden has been making headlines with its comparatively few rules in the fight against the corona virus – now the two largest opposition parties have called for an independent investigation into this procedure. The commission had to start work before the summer, the conservative moderate party and right-wing populist Sweden Democrats said yesterday in Stockholm.
The opposition parties are putting Prime Minister Stefan Löfven under pressure. The social democrat has so far been generally open to setting up an independent commission. According to his will, this should only commence after the end of the coronavirus pandemic.
Higher death rate than neighboring countries
The northern European country now has a much higher death rate than its Scandinavian neighboring countries. The government had recently been accused of playing with the lives of its citizens by not taking consistent measures.
The Swedish health authorities, on the other hand, continue to believe that their approach is more sustainable in the long term. Drastic short-term measures are not effective enough to justify their impact on society, they argue. 4,350 coronavirus infections have so far died in Sweden, and three quarters of the fatalities were elderly people in need of care.
