Hundreds of people have taken to the streets in Hong Kong to protest the Chinese government. In the Causeway Bay shopping district, demonstrators shouted pro-democratic slogans. The police used tear gas and pepper spray to dissolve the protest. On loudspeakers, she pointed out the ban on larger gatherings due to the pandemic. There were also protests outside the Chinese government liaison office.

The demonstrations in the financial metropolis are directed against Beijing’s plans for a new security law for the special administrative zone. The draft, presented at the National People’s Congress in Beijing on Friday, is intended to punish any “separatism and subversion” and prevent activities that “seriously damage national security”.

With the submission of the security law, China triggered international criticism and concern about Hong Kong’s autonomy. Hong Kong activists and the US government spoke of a death sentence for the democracy movement. The EU was also concerned.
