Under strict precautionary measures against the corona virus, several thousand delegates arrived in Beijing for the annual Chinese People’s Congress. The plenary session of the Chinese parliament begins tomorrow in the Great Hall of the People. Because of the outbreak of lung disease Covid-19, the meeting originally planned in March had been postponed for the first time in the recent history of the People’s Republic.

By rescheduling the annual meeting, China, as the country of origin of the pandemic, is demonstrating that it has made great strides in the fight against the virus. However, it is still difficult to speak of normality at the conference, since strict measures to prevent new infections had to be taken.

The meeting was shortened from ten to twelve days to around a week. For the trip to the capital, MEPs also had to take a CoV test on departure and arrival in Beijing. Many came in special trains so as not to travel in normal train traffic. In the hotels, members of the parliament should eat individually at tables or alone in their rooms.
