A suicide bomber killed Ahmed Muse Nur, governor of Mudug province, in an attack in the Somali city of Galkayo. According to the authorities, the assassin, who was also killed in the attack, was on a three-wheeled scooter. The impact of the explosion also killed three of Nurs’s bodyguards.

The Islamist terrorist militia al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack on its website. The group had already killed the local governor of the Nugal region in a similar attack in March.

The Islamist fundamentalists have been fighting for supremacy in the country in the Horn of Africa for years. They control areas in the south and center of the country and repeatedly carry out attacks. They mostly target security forces and politicians, but civilians are also killed. The group also attacks hotels and restaurants more often.
