Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, more than a quarter million people worldwide have died from an infection, according to US researchers. Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore had just under 3.6 million coronavirus infections and more than 251,000 deaths.

The infection and death rates published by the university are usually higher than those of the World Health Organization (WHO) because they are updated more often. In some cases, however, the numbers have recently been revised downwards. The WHO had reported more than 3.4 million confirmed infections and nearly 240,000 deaths.
