When a boat with refugees capsized on the Danube, at least one person died, eight more are missing. As the Romanian border police announced today, there were 16 refugees and two tugs on the ship that capsized last night at Drobeta-Turnu Severin in southwestern Romania. Romanian police officers at the Serbian border saved nine people from drowning.
The people who were rescued were people from Syria, Iraq, Yemen and the Palestinian territories, as well as a tugboat from Serbia, the border police said. A body was recovered in the night.
Romania is an EU member, but it is not part of the Schengen area. After Hungary sealed off its borders with Serbia, refugees are looking for other ways to get to Western Europe.
