In Israel it now boils down to a government alliance between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his challenger Benni Ganz. Ex-military chief Ganz turned around and declared himself ready to form a coalition for his more moderate blue-and-white alliance with the conservative Likud of Netanyahu. In view of the corona virus crisis, this is now necessary.

„The political, health and social crisis have led me to the decision that, even at a high political and personal price, I will do everything I can to form a government with the Likud,“ wrote Ganz to President Reuven Rivlin. Rivlin therefore asked yesterday to extend the deadline by 14 days.

The mandate to form a government expires on Tuesday. Rivlin had commissioned it in mid-March. There was again no clear government majority in the parliamentary election on March 2. It was the third choice in a year.
