For the first time since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001, representatives of the militant Islamist group came to Kabul for an official meeting. The Taliban had discussed with government officials about the planned prisoner exchange, the National Security Council spokesman Jawid Faisal tweeted today.
Taliban spokesman Sabiullah Mujahid had previously confirmed to the dpa that a three-person team had come to Kabul as observers for the planned release of prisoners and for preliminary talks. The International Red Cross was present as an observer.
Prisoner exchanges between the Taliban and the Afghan government were postponed again on Monday. Actually, both sides had agreed on a compromise a few days ago. 100 Taliban should have been released by March 31. The Taliban also wanted to release prisoners. The appointment had previously been postponed several times.
