After several sensational cases of female murders, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has blamed neoliberalism for the wave of violence. „We are seeing a decline, a progressive decline that has something to do with the neoliberal model,“ the left-wing populist said yesterday.
“You can’t solve this with police officers, prisons and the threat of a hard hand. We have to take care of it from scratch, with material and mental care. ”Lopez Obrador sees what he sees as the neoliberal policies of his predecessors as the cause of many problems in the Latin American country.
Ten murders of women every day
Mexico had recently been hit by several murders of women and girls. At the weekend, the body of a seven-year-old girl who had apparently been kidnapped and killed after school was discovered in a garbage bag.
A week ago, a 25-year-old was killed in Mexico City by her husband after an argument. Photos of the body with the throat cut came to the press and caused an outcry. An average of ten women are killed every day in Mexico.
Last week, feminists protested violence against women, set fires in front of the National Palace and painted paint on the walls and gates. You accuse President Lopez Obrador of not taking the problem seriously enough.
“With all due respect, I ask the feminists not to smear the doors and walls. We are working to ensure that there are no longer any feminicides, ”said the head of state, triggering protests again. „All gates and monuments should fall until our lives are worth something again,“ wrote the regional chief of the human rights organization Amnesty International, Erika Guevara-Rosas, on Twitter.
